I have a space that I spend 90% of my day in, if not more. A large desk occupies this space, where an iMac, an iPad and a work laptop resides. Most of the work I create, I'm sad to admit, is digital, however in another corner of the space lays an easel, a trolly full of paints and other traditional tools that have been collected over time. I wouldn't call it a studio, but it is certainly a space that is worked and lived in. This space is living area within a home, so finding that line of separation can be challenging.
As I work from home, the space functions very well for what I need it for. I spend most hours in the day sat in front of a laptop, which is then shutdown after working hours and the desktop computer is powered up. I switch from one job to another, which, sometimes that will be coursework or sometimes a personal project.
The dream would be to have a separate space for traditional medium. A space that will allow for larger works that can take space rather than having to move it around when life happens between. I'd like to paint more, explore mixed media and generally have fun with experimenting, something I don't feel I do enough of.
Sometimes I feel as though the space can impact your power to think big. Ideas can be closed within the perimeters of the space, and if the space feels to limit you, then what you create can also be limited, be that true or false! It wouldn't mean what you create is less good, quite the contrary. I just mean in terms of scale, boundaries and the space that motivates you to think big with the ideas. It kind of relates back to the Research task "where do good ideas come from" where I believe environment can also be an inspiring factor to how you think or generate ideas. Going for walks in open spaces can let your mind breath, which in the process might allow for different perspectives and ideas, in some cases the same can be said about your workspace.
The works I might create
Outside of design and illustration I love painting portraiture. What I really love, is the idea of documenting moments with paints, much like street photography. Taking the filter off and capturing authenticity in real life moments. Aside from this, I also just want to let loose and combine expressive brush work and mark making with mixed media to create textures, perhaps bringing this in to portraiture would be exactly what I need to shake frustrations away.
Just to completely contradict all that, it would be also very cool to illustrate large works using traditional medium. I've never succeeded in painting an illustration, this would be something I would love to try and challenge myself with. Perhaps a hand painted graphic novel, or maybe start small with one off pieces. the intricacy of Mobious
