NEW MONTHLY EVENT!

Sketching Stories - From Ideas to Illustrated Tales

Introducing Sketching Stories, a relaxed yet engaging event designed to help you transform everyday ideas into illustrated narratives. Whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your creative process, this session provides all the guidance and support you need to turn your thoughts into visuals.

In a supportive and friendly environment, you’ll gain confidence in using your sketchbook as a powerful tool for brainstorming, developing, and finalising your ideas into illustrated stories. Each month will bring a new prompt, brief, or subject that we will then explore together, learning where to start and how to progress.

The monthly event can be used as an opportunity to continue working on one idea, or to challenge yourself in creating new stories each month. We'll discuss the use of reference images and the importance of research either to support your ideas or to understand your audience. I hope it will inspire you to continue beyond the event!

I'm often asked how do I come up with the ideas? Well, in this event I will share my techniques in how I take a simple idea and turn it into a fleshed out story, be it in a singular illustrated format, across several pages or panels or even as a short animated gif!

What you can expect:

  • A relaxed, friendly environment where everyone is encouraged to explore their creativity

  • Demonstrations, guidance and support throughout the evening (if needed)

  • Inspiration from everyday life and creative prompts to help spark your ideas

  • A focus on using your sketchbook as a tool for brainstorming and refining concepts

  • Exploring storytelling styles from comic strips to graphic novels, zines, children books, and even branding

  • Understanding how to find, create, and use reference images as a way to help bring your vision to life

The event is suitable for both beginner and professionals who might like the idea of hanging out in a relaxed and social environment with their sketchbook to be challenged or inspired. No experience required, but an interest in illustration and storytelling is beneficial!

Sketching Stories is a unique event that strikes the perfect balance between a laid-back social evening and an engaging workshop. As the name suggests, the intention for the night is to explore narrative using various techniques in our sketchbooks.

Please note, whilst this is an event that explores narrative, it is not a lesson on how to write stories. The event is designed to explore visual narrative through illustration, this may include some writing but it is not taught or essential.
